With a commitment to achieving a 100% intern placement rate in Tasmanian hospitals, the program spans five years (with a maximum of seven years) and prepares students in both theoretical knowledge and practical skills essential for leadership roles in healthcare.
Whether studying in Hobart or the Cradle Coast, the University of Tasmania ensures a transformative educational experience aimed at shaping competent and compassionate future doctors.
University of Tasmania Undergraduate Medicine Course Structure
The BMedScMD curriculum is structured around four Domains, aligning with the University of Tasmania's graduate profile and the Australian Medical Council's guidelines. These Domains include Clinical Practice, Professionalism and Leadership, Health and Society, and Science and Scholarship. Each Domain focuses on developing the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for a competent medical graduate.
The curriculum employs learner-centred strategies to foster critical thinking and adaptability in handling complex information and situations. Emphasising 'situated' learning, the program encourages active engagement and enhances retention. Regular Case Based Learning (CBL) activities are important to integrating and reinforcing key concepts throughout the program.
University of Tasmania Medical School Admissions Criteria
UTAS Medical School Rural Quota
The University of Tasmania’s BMedScMD program reserves 50% of domestic places for rural students. Applicants who have lived in an Australian Statistical Geography Standard - Remoteness Area 2-5 (ASGS-RA2-5) for 5 consecutive years or 10 cumulative years are eligible for the rural application process (RAP). More details are available on the RAP webpage.
UTAS Medical School Tasmanian Quota
At least 75% of domestic places are offered to Tasmanians, defined as:
- School leavers with a Tasmanian Certificate of Education (TCE) or International Baccalaureate (IB) from a Tasmanian school within 5 years of the course start date.
- Applicants with prior tertiary study who either currently reside in Tasmania and have lived there for at least 5 consecutive years, or have lived in Tasmania for 10 cumulative years and within 10 years prior to the course start date.
UTAS Medicine School Leaver Criteria
UTAS School Leaver Applications are considered based on ATAR or ATAR-equivalent scores and a valid UCAT ANZ score. The 2024 minimum adjusted ATAR (including rural status adjustment) for the University of Tasmania was 95.00.
Please note that this ATAR score is only a guide and may be subject to change each year.
The Rural Application Process (RAP) provides adjustment factors for rural school leaver applicants, allowing for a maximum adjustment of five ATAR points. However, all other eligibility criteria must be met for consideration under this scheme.
A valid UCAT ANZ score is required for all applicants and serves as a secondary ranking method for those with the same ATAR. Scores are valid only for the current admission cycle, and UTAS evaluates the combined scores of the four cognitive sections, excluding the situational judgement test.
For prerequisite requirements, applicants must have satisfactory achievement in Tasmanian Senior Secondary Chemistry (CHM415115) or an equivalent course within the last five years. If this requirement is not met, the applicant must complete a UTAS foundation Chemistry unit before admission. Additionally, satisfactory achievement in Year 12 English within the last five years is necessary.
Non-accepted tests for domestic applicants include the ISAT (International Student Admission Test) and the MCAT (Medical College Admission Test).
UTAS Medicine Postgraduate Criteria
Applications are evaluated based on the GPA and GAMSAT scores. Applicants must have completed a Bachelor-level degree ) or higher from an Australian higher education provider within the last 10 years before the course commencement.
Alternatively, an equivalent overseas qualification with current general registration for the last five years with the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA) or the Australian Veterinarian State Registration Authority is acceptable.
The minimum unweighted GPA required for consideration is 5.25. The GPA for the first complete Bachelor degree is calculated upon completion of that degree.
If additional tertiary study has been undertaken, an average GPA is calculated for all tertiary study (at Bachelor degree level or higher) as of the application closing date. A completed Master's by Research degree adds a 0.2 points bonus to the overall GPA, while a completed PhD adds a 0.4 points bonus.
Applicants must achieve a minimum score of 50 in all three sections of the GAMSAT. The accepted test sittings are those recognised by GEMSAS.
