Analysis of the 2024 UCAT Results Against Previous Years

Has the UCAT Gotten Harder?

It is difficult to say whether or not the actual exam has gotten harder. However, across the years, there has been a steady increase in scores across all sections and deciles. This could be reflective of students commencing their UCAT preparation earlier or undertaking more tutoring, thereby being better equipped for the exam.

This may lead to the trend seen each year where a higher score is needed in order to attain a certain decile - for example the 90th percentile score increasing by an entire 60 points for the 2024 season.

Which Section did Students Perform the Worse/Best in?

Whilst scores have been increasing every year, there are still some trends when comparing the relative scores of each section. Verbal Reasoning has clearly been the worst-scoring section across the years, and this trend has continued into 2024.

The best-performing section has historically been between Quantitative Reasoning or Abstract Reasoning, but it appears that the latter was the best-scoring section in 2024, with a near-perfect score of 880 out of 900 being the 90th percentile score for Abstract Reasoning. This is in comparison to the same percentile in Verbal Reasoning being only a 720 out of 900 - a difference of 160 points.

How Students Performed each Year in the UCAT?

The bar chart above showcases the growth of UCAT scores within the past three years (2022 to 2024).

An increase in each decile has led to a top overall score of 3060 in the 9th decile, compared to 2022 where students scored below 3000. This steady increase in scores is promising for students sitting the UCAT ANZ in 2025.

However, it is important for students to stay on top of their UCAT prep and ensure they are on the right track to success.

What is Considered a Good UCAT Score?

There are many factors that contribute to a ‘good’ UCAT score, including the specific university, location and bonuses. Generally speaking, a score in the 90th percentile is considered to be ‘good’ for most universities, while a score in the 95th percentile is considered to be ‘very competitive’ for most universities.

In 2024, these scores would equate to 3060 and 3180, respectively. It is also important to note that the UCAT score needs to be coupled with an equally competitive ATAR and interview performance for medical school admission.
